Supply chain issues and increased demand as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have caused food prices to reach an all-time high, according to The New York Times. In fact, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations found that there was an average 1.1 percent increase in food prices in the course of just one month, from December 2021 to January 2022. And that was following a 7 percent increase between December 2020 and December 2021, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like grocery bills will be leveling out anytime soon, either. The USDA predicts that supermarket costs may rise an additional 2.5 percent by the close of 2022. A report based on survey data from 1,000 consumers by accounting firm KPMG forecasted that shoppers will spend $79 more each month on groceries in 2022, forking out an average of $611 per month this year, compared with $532 per month in 2021, according to Winsight Grocery Business.
