It’s no secret that things are tough these days. Between inflation and food chain issues we have expensive food items in stores now. Some compare our current conditions with that of the Great Depression nearly 100 years ago.
Since the pandemic, world war issues and inflation, many people are thinking more and more about ways to save money and be more self-sustainable in these times. Folks are cutting corners and being creative with all kinds of ways to help themselves at home.
Recently my wife was told about what is known as “Depression Recipes” dishes that American’s cooking during the Great Depression nearly 100 years ago that saved money and used what little supplies they had. In this “life hack” it’s peanut butter bread.
According to the information my wife received it is a bread recipe that folks cooked because it was inexpensive, used a few ingredients, and was very tasty. In this particular recipe there is only six ingredients, five if you cut out the sugar, so its very easy to prepare.
This past weekend April replicated this “depression recipe” and we sampled the very simple peanut butter bread. The six ingredients include:
- 2 cups All Purpose Flour
- 1/4 Cup Sugar
- 4 tsp Baking Powder
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1 1/3 cup Milk
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
By the way we did not add the sugar, the peanut butter does have sugar so we just mixed the five ingredients to make the bread. Mix all ingredients then place in greased bread pan and bake at 350 for one hour and fifteen minutes and that’s it, done and delicious.
If you did want the bread a bit sweeter you could add honey in place of sugar. I loved this sweet treat and it was fine without any added sweetener. Top with a spoonful of jam and its like a heavenly PB&J.
